Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled was first registered under the Bible Presbyterian Welfare Services umbrella. In 2007 the Home was registered as a separate Society and obtained Charity and Institution of Public Character (IPC) status in its own right.
The church’s group of devoted volunteers serves as musicians, storytellers and befrienders to the residents and care-givers of Bishan Home.
Bishan Home Sunday School (Sundays 10.30–11.30 am)
This takes place in the Bishan Home multi-purpose hall. We lead the residents in singing praises to our Lord and share Bible stories. Sometimes, we involve the residents in role play to deepen their understanding of the Bible stories.
Our volunteers are also friends and honest listeners. Besides giving words of comfort, we pray with them and encourage them to bring their happiness and sorrow to our Lord.
We have been conducting devotions with Bishan Home residents every Wednesday for more than 10 years. Over the years, we see the residents growing to understand more about the Bible, prayer and the character of God Himself. The residents always look forward to visits from volunteers like us: someone to talk to, to hug them and pray for them. This is what we have been called to do – to show them the love of God in practical ways.
Thursday Sewing Class
The Bishan Home Sewing Class has showcased completed projects by residents. Some of the works have been sold and the money raised used for outings and activities to enhance the relationship between residents and volunteers. The Sewing Class continues to seek volunteers.
We have organised special celebrations during Easter and Christmas, and outings during Chinese New Year and Easter.
A monthly prayer meeting is held to pray for the needs of the home and residents.
Ministries, action groups or individuals are welcome to serve the residents by helping out at the Sunday School, organising outings or events.
