A Year to Be (a bit more) Still
By Ps Dev Menon
I had hoped that 2020 would be a “Sabbath Year”. I had just written and published “The Rest Race” with Graceworks and was hoping to teach our congregation how to rest in the Lord.
Then Covid-19 hit.
Since then, we’ve been running at quite a pace. Now don’t get me wrong, the Lord used this pandemic to do a LOT of good things. We shifted to a congregational model of church; formed the Next Lap; expanded our leadership; drafted a new vision. It’s been great.
But now we sense the time has come full circle – and it’s time to pause.
In fact, that will be the theme of next year’s (English) church camp – pause. A time to see where we are, ask good questions, interact with God at a deeper (or more honest) level.
It will be a good year to do this. Our 3-fold vision has run it’s 3-year course. The A&A project (developing our 5th floor) will be in full swing. We can use the time to work on things like spiritual disciplines and have spiritual retreats… make more time for reflection and processing; make more time to spend waiting upon God.
It will also be a good time to adjust how we do things. Many leaders are burning both ends, and I think it’s time to evolve. Maybe not that we do less things, but each person not do so many different kinds of things? Just focus on doing one thing well. To use one theologian’s phrase: we want zeal, but without burnout.
How will this coming year proceed? I’m not sure – but I’m trying to be still and know that He is God. I trust that He will lead us.
