Blessed 31st Anniversary Zion Bishan!
By Ps Vernon Quek
Yesterday (Saturday 25th October), we celebrated 31 years of Zion Bishan Bible-Presbyterian Church. While we had the Thanksgiving Service yesterday, did you know that Zion Bishan isn’t quite 31 years old yet? Do you know the exact date Zion Bishan was founded – the day marked by our very first Service at 4 Bishan Street 13[1]? [see answer in the footnote below]
The answer to that question also happens to be inscribed on the Dedication Stone at the entrance of our main sanctuary. That same stone reminds us of that great truth in Deuteronomy 32:3-4. It says:
‘Ascribe… greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, His work is perfect.’
What a wonderful thing to remember on our 31st anniversary – to ascribe greatness…all that has happened in and through us these years to our Great God. Indeed He has been our Rock, and all that has happened in the last 31 years is His work, not our’s.
The Dedication Stone goes on to remind us what our building (and by extension Zion Bishan as a whole) exists for…
‘This building was dedicated…for the maintenance of a true and faithful witness of the Lord in these days of apostasy and for the proclamation and demonstration of God’s love to all the residents at Bishan and beyond.’
Yesterday was a significant time of not just looking back to how the Lord has led and grown us for the above, but also a time of looking forward to the future – to God continuing and perfecting His perfect work. This was especially true as we ordained Danny Chua, prayerfully dedicating him to a lifetime of serving our Lord Jesus as a Minister of the Gospel.
We stand at the start of the next 30 years of the Zion Bishan story. What will the Lord do in and through us these next few decades? We might not know exactly what lies ahead, but we do know this:
For the LORD is good;
His steadfast love endures forever,
and His faithfulness to all generations.
(Psalm 100:5)
Whatever the Lord has in store for us in the coming years, we stand not on what will be achieved through us, but on the Lord’s steadfast and enduring love and faithfulness to us. To all generations of Zion Bishan – past, present and future.
Please join me in prayer for Zion Bishan this anniversary week: that we as a church family will always remain faithful to our God’s love for us in His Son Jesus – in this and every generation to come!
