The God Who Lowers Himself for the Lowly

By Ps Vernon Quek

On this last Sunday of the year, I wonder: how has 2025 been for you? Has it been a good year, or a year you would rather forget about and move on from?

Over these last few days of the year, let me encourage you to reflect on the year past, and to spend some deliberate time with the Lord committing the coming year into His hands.

This past week at both our Christmas Services, we heard the wonderful reminder about what kind of God we have – the Most High God who willingly lowered Himself to dwell not in the greatest of palaces, but in a lowly manger.

I was struck by just how much this shows us God’s heart – and that encourages me as I look forward to 2026.

Listen to what Luke records for us in the prophecy of Zechariah about his son John the Baptist: (Luke 1:76-79)

[76] And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
[77] to give knowledge of salvation to his people
in the forgiveness of their sins,
[78] because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high
[79] to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace
.”

These precious words again give us confidence that no matter what we’ve gone through in 2025, no matter how messy or broken the year was for us, that we have a God, a Saviour, who is utterly committed to giving light to our darkness, even to the point of giving up His ‘Most High-ness’ and coming down to dwell with us and take on all our brokenness.

I hope that once again our God’s heart shown through what He has done for us in Jesus shapes your thoughts and prayers as you speak to Him about 2026. Whatever may come for you in the New Year, may your confidence in Jesus and His love for us be unshakable.

Have a very Blessed New Year!
