Blessed Pentecost Sunday! #Pentecost #ReceptionOfMembers

By Ps Vernon Quek

Pentecost Sunday is one of the great family celebration Sundays of the Christian church. ‘Pentecost’ comes from a Greek word meaning ‘fiftieth’, because it is celebrated fifty days after Easter, remembering the day our risen Lord Jesus poured out His Holy Spirit upon His people. This was the beginning of a Church that was empowered not merely to exist, but to be Jesus’ witnesses: to love, to grow, and share the mission to witness to the end of the world![1]

That is why it is especially fitting that this Sunday, we at Zion Bishan have another big reason to celebrate: Today, we receive more than 30 new members into our church family.

What a joy this is.

In a world where commitment is often treated lightly, church membership reminds us that Christianity is not merely an individual spiritual journey. The Spirit who unites us to Christ also unites us to one another. The book of Acts shows us that Pentecost did not simply create isolated believers; it created a devoted, worshipping, learning, fellowshipping, gospel-proclaiming community of God’s people.

And so this Sunday, as we welcome these new brothers and sisters into membership, we are not merely adding names into a database or filling seats in a sanctuary. We are publicly recognising fellow pilgrims whom God has joined together with us in Christ for a shared life and a shared mission.

At the reception of members, we will together say these words to our new members:

We welcome you here to Zion Bishan.
We are a church that desires to get deep in God’s Word, as we learn to be disciples of Jesus Christ.
We are a church that desires to get real in fellowship, as the Spirit shapes us to love one another.
We are a church that desires to get sent for the kingdom, as we participate in our Father’s costly mission to reconcile sinful humanity and fallen creation to Himself.
We are a City on a Hill, a Light to the Nations.

These are not merely aspirational slogans. They are Spirit-enabled commitments.

It is the Holy Spirit who deepens us in God’s Word.
It is the Holy Spirit who teaches us to love one another genuinely.
It is the Holy Spirit who sends ordinary Christians out for God’s extraordinary kingdom purposes.

Pentecost reminds us that the church is not held together merely by common interests, personalities, or even history. The church is a supernatural work of God. We are a people gathered by the Father, saved through the Son, and empowered by the Spirit.

So this Sunday, let us warmly receive these new members with joy and thanksgiving. Let us remember that every new member is evidence of God’s grace to our church body. And let us celebrate with joy the common mission God has given us here at Zion Bishan: the privilege of being witnesses of King Jesus anywhere and everywhere we go!

May the Spirit continue to shape us until the light of Christ shines ever more brightly through us to the nations. Now, more than ever, we so greatly need the powerful work of the Spirit within us![2]
