Our Music and Public Announcement (PA) Ministries

Getting Real about Getting Rest
Ever since we announced that this year was the Year of Rest, we have been encouraging our leaders and our ministries to consider how to put this into practice.
I’d like to tell you about the Music and PA ministries. They are crucial for keeping our worship services and many other activities going.
Did you know that we have eight music teams? Four for the morning services and four for the afternoon service. They are rostered across the four weeks of the month, and we’d put together a volunteer team for fifth Sunday worship services, as well as for special services (e.g. Good Friday, Christmas, Watch Night, Anniversary, etc.).
Our PA ministries assign volunteers every week to support the music team rehearsals and ensure that the sound and projection work during our worship services.
They are usually the first to come, and among the last to leave the service.
You can see why a Year of Rest would be so helpful for them.
This year, the Music and PA ministries will make some tweaks to reset, refresh and restore a healthy rhythm of ministry:
For 1 week of each month (starting on 15 Feb), the worship in song segment of the service will be carried by a simplified team, comprising one song leader and one musician. They will mainly be drawn from former ministry members.
This will be a fresh experience for some of us, but speaking from personal experience, I trust that we will find that it’s still possible to worship the Lord meaningfully.
Under this arrangement, the PA team will not need to support rehearsals and will only need to do a simple set-up on Sundays.
With the time saved, the Music and PA ministry will attend to the following:
- Relationship building within and between ministries;
- Spend time worshipping the Lord together and explore fresh approaches to congregational worship in song;
- Learn together about serving from a posture of rest;
- Train new ministry members; and
- Tidy the sanctuary space for our equipment and wiring.
I’m glad that they have undertaken this initiative to seek a deeper experience of God’s rest.
Let’s encourage them and take a moment to appreciate a Music or PA ministry volunteer near you.
Meanwhile, how are you doing in this Year of Rest?
