OT Overview Devotions (Week #14: 1 Samuel 16:1-17; 2 Samuel 7)

Day #1:

What have we learnt so far about a king from Deuteronomy 17:14-20 and 1 Samuel? Why do the people of God need a king as described in the Deut. passage? How has knowing these truths challenged you in the way you think of Jesus as king? Speak to God about this in prayer.

Day #2:

Read 1 Samuel 16:1-17. How does David compare with the picture of a king that we are looking out for in the OT narrative so far? How is David different from Saul (and why is that important)?

Day #3:

Read 2 Samuel 7:1-17. What exactly does God promise to (a) David and to (b) Israel?

Day #4:

Consider the covenant promises you have observed and noted down from Day 3. How do these covenant promises take humanity one step closer to solving the big problem so far?

Day #5:

Read 2 Samuel 7:18-29. How does David respond to God’s promises to him? Together with everything that we’ve seen so far in the OT narrative, what can we tell about David’s heart?

Day #6:

Look again at 2 Samuel 7:19. Why is the Davidic Covenant “instruction for mankind” (ESV) or “a revelation for mankind” (CSB)?

How does the Davidic Covenant matter to you today? Take time to speak to our Heavenly Father about why this matters.
